Derrick Gleed

Since 2013 I have had the honour to serve the residents of Whitby on both local and regional councils. This experience has provided me the opportunity to be involved in a full range of matters important to our community and, indeed, the Region we call home.

My focus in the coming years will be on job creation in our community. The strength of our community lies in the ability to live and work close to home. While our Town and Region has enormous opportunity in front of us, I believe it is imperative we are represented by people who understand the process and the prospect of where we need to be.

Objectives for the Coming Term:

Economic Development

In the previous term, Council concentrated on eight goals. A big part of this was a focus on our Downtowns. As such, building blocks have been put in place that are resulting in a revitalization process beginning to take shape. Along with new urban development, we are achieving growth in business development. The result is hundreds of new quality jobs in the area.

It is now time to turn our attention to the employment lands adjacent to the 412 and 407. I intend to push hard for the Region to advance their capital expenditures, in order to service these lands and bring them onboard so that more jobs can be created.

A focus on the reduction of red tape has been started, but there is much more work to be done. We compete with many other municipalities across the province and beyond. We must improve how we do business, become more efficient and work hard to achieve success in a competitive market. Whitby should be seen to be THE place to invest.

Housing Options

I am very supportive of the Affordable Housing Task force initiatives that were commenced during the last term of Regional government. In particular, we need to place a focus, and create an investment environment, such that it will stimulate growth in senior’s affordable housing stock. The recent incentives that Council approved for our Downtowns will help, but more work needs to be done.

Taxes

Council needs to work hard to hold tax increases to a level at or below inflation. By introducing a Service Delivery Review, we have been able to put in place the tools that will allow Council to focus better on this objective. Working with the Region, I will focus on a rationalization of services so that duplication between the Local and Regional levels of government are removed.

Safe community

There has been much discussion about various traffic safety initiatives. Some work, while others are less impactful. No one initiative is going to solve the problem. This is a community wide problem that requires a community solution. The biggest challenge is driver habits. Speeding tickets may have some impact, but evidence shows, it is not the solution. Council needs to work with Durham Regional Police and other groups to develop a long term solution, focused upon driving habits.
